These days, smartphones have become very necessary, but they also bombard us with endless notifications. Food delivery ads, random sales offers, game promotions, all compete for our attention. This barrage of alerts makes it easy to miss critical notifications like OTPs, warnings, delivery updates or important texts and mails. This results in one always being distracted and stressed.

One of the current solutions is “Do Not Disturb” mode. It applies restrictions on notifications and calls and users can also enable app-by-app notification controls. But this only partly address the issue as its too manual and time-consuming resulting in users being too intimidated to even start keeping settings. None of these methods understand context or prioritize anything automatically. This is the gap in the current market.

The solution is to build a Smart Notification Filter powered by AI. The filter would categorize incoming notifications into three lists: Urgent (e.g., OTPs, reminders, calls), Useful (delivery updates, calendar events), and Promotional (ads, sales, spam). The system will learn from user behaviour like what they click, what they clear, and at what times they interact with them. For example, if I always ignore food coupons but instantly open my college mails, the filter will adjust and push college mails to the top while hiding promotional spam.

Beneficiaries:

  • Users get peace of mind, less distractions, and less risk of missing urgent notifications.
  • Companies/OS makers (like Apple, Google, or smartphone brands) benefit by offering a premium feature, improving user experience thereby increasing customer loyalty.

This problem matters to me because I experience it everyday, receiving hundreds of notifications and sometimes even missing important academic related mails due to it.

Technical Details: The system can use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze notification text, sender identity, and past user actions. It is lightweight on-device machine learning models and it ensures privacy while still learning user preferences. Notifications can then be displayed in a priority inbox style, with urgent ones highlighted and promotional ones batched for later review.

The Problem: Food waste is a widespread issue, even among experienced cooks. My mother regularly forgets about vegetables she's purchased, and they end up spoiling before she uses them - not because she doesn't know how to cook or store them properly, but simply because items get pushed to the back of the fridge or don't come to mind when planning meals.

 

Gaps in current solutions/market: Currently, apps have addressed this problem by letting us input whatever we buy and they would notify us when the expiry dates are near. But the problem here lies within the input. Users are very unlikely to put the time and energy to keep updating their grocery list every time, maybe the enthusiasm lasts for a few days after trying the app, but it diffuses out quickly. This input fatigue makes current solutions unsuitable for long-term use.

 

My Solution: Prime Thyme

What if we could automate the entire process? This is where Prime Thyme comes into play. Instead of manual input, this app would automatically track grocery purchases through transaction data, identify food items, and provide timely reminders about when to use them based on their natural freshness cycles.

Beyond just reminders, the app suggests meals based on what groceries you have and which items need to be used first. This addresses both food waste and the mental load of meal planning - especially helpful for people who find cooking decisions overwhelming.

 

Who benefits:

  • Users: Households reduce food waste, save money, and get meal suggestions based on what they actually have at home
  • Buyers: Grocery chains could integrate this as a value-added service; meal planning companies could license the technology

Why this problem matters to me: This problem resonates deeply because I see it happening in my own home. My mother, despite being an experienced cook who understands food storage, regularly ends up throwing away vegetables simply because they slip her mind. If someone with her culinary knowledge struggles with this, it highlights how this isn't really about cooking skills or food awareness - it's about the mental load of tracking everything we buy. This makes me genuinely concerned about my own ability to manage food waste when I'm cooking independently, especially since I don't even have her baseline knowledge about how long different produce stays fresh. The waste feels particularly frustrating because it's so preventable - we're not talking about food going bad due to poor storage or lack of knowledge, but simply because life gets busy and things get forgotten. 

 

Technical details: The solution would automatically parse grocery transactions (through bank APIs or receipt scanning) to identify food items, then provide freshness reminders and meal suggestions without requiring manual input. It could include a database of produce shelf-life specific to Indian varieties and storage conditions, with future expansion to diet-specific meal planning based on available ingredients and their expiration timelines.

Plastic waste is one of the pressing environmental challenges. A major contributor is single-use plastic beverage lids, which are used every year worldwide, most of which are made from non-recyclable polypropylene. In India, tea & coffee are sold in disposable cups by vendors, which contributes heavily to this stream of waste. Current alternatives, such as paper and compostable lids, are limited either by deforestation concerns or high costs.

The gap lies in finding a scalable, affordable, and eco-friendly lid alternative that can replace single-use plastics without burdening vendors or consumers.

So these eco lids are made from agricultural by-products, specifically corn husk fibres processed into durable biodegradable lids. This approach turns farm waste into a valuable resource while keeping costs low through decentralised manufacturing units.

Who benefits?

Vendors: Street tea sellers, cafes, and quick service restaurants gain a low-cost alternative to banned plastics.

Consumers: Access to eco-friendly products without price hikes

These sensors notify a simple app or WhatsApp group when food is available and when items are about to expire, so nothing goes to waste. Restaurants, households, and events can place their excess food directly in these fridges.

 The beneficiaries are low-income families who gain access to free meals, restaurants that reduce food waste, and the environment that sees less landfill dumping.
