We are what we eat

We know the importance of food, both in quantity (calories, macronutrients) and in quality (vitamins, minerals, ease of digestion etc).

Yet we are int he middle of a global food crisis, with over 1.3 billion tons of food wasted annually yet millions suffer not only from hunger and lack of food, but also malnutrition and other deficiencies. Existing apps and services either act as inventory management for food stocks or as calorie and macro tracker apps. This is where NutriSave can come in.

An intuitive mobile app would scan barcodes and receipts of groceries and keep track of expiry dates, creating a digital pantry of sorts, allowing the end user to have timely reminders of food nearing the expiration date.

For foodstuffs bought from marketplaces without barcodes (Ex:- local vendors for vegetables and fruits, butcher shops for meats), The app would take in other user inputs (weight of food, image of food etc) to maintain accuracy above the current list of macro tracking apps

But unlike other management apps, NutriSave would go further, taking in the data and analyzing the nutritional content of the food (data available publicly--- https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/ ) and give custom meals based on the foodstuffs available.

Ex:-  If a family has a shelf filled with a healthy amount of carbs but less fibre and vitamin c, the app would suggest a simple stif fry recipe with the near expiring vegetables and a dash of lemon juice.

A.I. can be implemented effectively to manage the databasing and give regular updates alongside giving cost-effective, yet appetizing meal plans based on existing variations created in cuisines aroudn the world

Who benefits:-

Consumers:- Individuals and  families will be
                                                 - Spending less money

                                                 - Wasting less food

                                                 - Being more healthier over all

Food banks:- Will receive updates on surplus foods

Communities:- Less bio-waste, reduced landfill wastes, improved health

We shoudl not stand to live in a world with has both a global hunger crisis and food waste situation.

NutriSave brings a consumer oriented solution, making sure that the user makes smarter, healthier and sustainable decisions while shopping.

  • NutriSave is a brilliant idea—reducing food waste, promoting healthier eating, and helping families make smarter, more sustainable choices. A much-needed solution for today’s food challenges!
  • NutriSave is unique because it tackles two critical global issues simultaneously: food waste and malnutrition. While most existing apps focus only on calorie counting, grocery management, or meal planning, NutriSave goes a step further by integrating both aspects. By analyzing the nutritional content of the foods already available in a household and suggesting meals that optimize health, it ensures that users not only reduce waste but also improve their diet quality. This makes the app highly practical, relevant, and socially impactful.
  • This is an impressive idea. Nutrisave helps a lot in daily life and also save money, waste less food, and eat healthier meals with simple reminders and smart recipe suggestions.
  • NutriSave is a smart and helpful idea. It reminds people about food before it expires, reduces waste, and saves money. Unlike other apps, it also shows nutrition and gives recipe ideas with the food you already have. This makes families healthier, helps food banks, and reduces waste in the community. Simple, useful, and good for everyone.
  • The idea is solid, but the consistency and regularity of checking the foods brought via the app is something to put into question, because you cannot expect the users to do that on a regular basis, so how would you encourage them to do it? And would there be a regional limitation or will this work for foodstuffs beyond India as well?
  • I really like this idea! It feels practical because almost everyone struggles with either forgetting about groceries or not knowing what to cook with what’s left. The recipe suggestions using food that’s about to expire make it super useful. If I were to give one suggestion, maybe start small like just tracking expiry dates and giving simple meal ideas and then slowly bring in the nutrition analysis. That way people will find it easy to use from day one and naturally get into the habit.
    • Thank you for your input.

Yes this is a rather viable strategy, with the basic features like pantry reminders enabled and the ai meal planner being optional
  • This is a really meaningful and practical idea! I like how NutriSave doesn’t just track expiry dates but also suggests healthy, waste-reducing recipes. One question though how will you encourage people to consistently log foods bought from local markets where there are no barcodes?
  • This is an excellent and very timely idea. I love how NutriSave goes beyond simple inventory or calorie tracking by combining food management with personalized nutrition guidance. The integration of AI to suggest meals based on what’s available and near expiry is both practical and innovative. Highlighting benefits not just for individuals, but also for food banks and communities, shows a strong understanding of the broader impact. This approach tackles food waste, malnutrition, and cost efficiency all at once—making it a truly holistic solution
  • I have a quick question. Can't these big MnCs just refuse to give you data about their products. I mean they are "big bullies" and if this risks in lesser sales, they could just refuse right?
