Farm to Fork

One of the biggest challenges today is the gap between farmers and end consumers. Farmers often face exploitation from middlemen, while consumers pay inflated prices for food that may not even be fresh. At the same time, food waste remains a major global problem, as unsold vegetables and fruits are discarded daily. Current solutions such as online grocery delivery platforms focus mainly on convenience but fail to ensure fair pricing for farmers or guaranteed freshness for buyers.

My idea is to build a Smart Farm-to-Home Food Network—a digital platform where farmers can directly connect with consumers and local retailers. Using mobile technology, farmers will upload their daily harvest availability, and customers can pre-order or subscribe for weekly delivery of fresh produce. The platform will integrate real-time stock management, logistics support, and AI-driven demand prediction to minimize waste. Additionally, by removing middlemen, farmers earn better profits, and customers receive fresher produce at lower costs.

The primary beneficiaries are farmers, households, and small retailers. Farmers gain higher incomes and market visibility, households access affordable and healthier food, and retailers can source directly at transparent prices. Communities also benefit from reduced waste and sustainable food practices.

This problem matters deeply to me because I have seen farmers in my community struggle to make ends meet despite working hard, while families pay steep prices for food. The imbalance is unfair and unsustainable. By bridging this gap, I want to create a system where both sides win, and food waste is minimized.

Technically, the platform would include a farmer app, customer app, and logistics dashboard. AI demand forecasting and blockchain-based smart contracts could be added to ensure transparency and trust. Over time, this network could expand into dairy, grains, and other essentials, revolutionizing the local food economy.

Problem

Farmers are always under pressure because of wild animals, intruders, unpredictable weather and low-quality land in which they cultivate their crops. Those risks typically cause losses of crops and economic stress. Large-sized farmers are unable to monitor their farms every time, and small farmers could not afford expensive surveillance.

Proposed Solution

AgriWatch is an AI-powered IoT device that protects crops and assists farmers in controlling farms. Solar-powered sensors measure movement, temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and other valuable nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The AI differentiates between friendly activity and danger, which subsequently turn on ultrasonic and infrared sound signals to frighten the animals or intruders and sends real-time warnings to the phone belonging to the farmer. The system does not only monitor weather conditions and rainfall but also gives warning to farmers against the occurrence of heavy rain or other possible floods. Additionally, AgriWatch gives advice on irrigation, use of fertilizers, nutrient management, and the method of maximising crop health and yields.

Gaps in the Market

The solutions that are present concentrate on either environmental monitoring or surveillance. Not many of them include both practical crop advice and weather alerts in a single low-priced system. AgriWatch is non-theftable as sensors are small, solar powered, securely fixed in high or hidden positions in crops and are tamper-proof, hence hard to steal or break.

Why It Matters

This is personal to me. My family is also in the agricultural field and my parents are employed in industries that depend on crops hence I have seen and heard how crop losses affect the livelihoods. I too have observed the repercussions of the animal control and even tranquilizing which may additionally pose a risk to crops. AgriWatch offers an alternative to invasive methods that is both humane and allows the farmer to be at peace with himself and view of the weather and find the motivation to be productive.

Who Benefits

Small farmers receive cheap insurance, farm management advice, and weather forecasts. Big farms are now enjoying real time dashboards and analytics. The communities will have a more stable and reliable source of food, and entrepreneurs will be able to develop activities on the foundation of smart farming solutions.
