Problem

However, it also faces serious challenges of misuse, particularly through the rise of AI-generated deepfakes. Deepfakes are hyper-realistic fake videos, audio clips, or images created using artificial intelligence. While this technology can be used positively in entertainment, education, and accessibility, it is increasingly being misused to spread misinformation, harass individuals, or damage reputations. For example, manipulated videos of public figures can influence elections, while fake voice recordings can be used in financial scams. On a personal level, deepfakes are being weaponized to bully students or create non-consensual content, leaving victims with emotional and social scars. This shows how harmful the misuse of AI can be for both individuals and society.
Gap
Existing solutions are not effective enough. Watermarking AI-generated content is often invisible to the average user and can be bypassed. Fact-checking platforms usually take time to verify and publish corrections, and by then the fake content may already have gone viral. Deepfake detection tools do exist, but they are often too technical or require advanced software, which makes them inaccessible to ordinary users. In short, there is no simple, fast, and accessible method for everyday people to verify whether online content is genuine or fake.
Solution
That’s where Vera comes in, a lightweight browser extension and mobile application that works like a truth filter for online content. When a user encounters a suspicious video, image, or voice clip, they can click “Check with Vera.” The system will scan the content using AI models designed to detect deepfake signals such as pixel-level inconsistencies, voice synthesis patterns, and metadata mismatches. The result will be shown in a clear and easy-to-understand color system:
• ✅ Green – Authentic
• ⚠️ Yellow – Altered/Unverified
• ❌ Red – Likely Deepfake
Additionally, Vera will include a community verification system where flagged content can be reviewed by trusted fact-checkers or partner organizations, which will improve accuracy and build trust.

Why It Matters to Me
This problem matters to me because as a student who spends a lot of time online, I have seen how quickly false information spreads among young people. Even a single fake video or manipulated post can shape opinions, create rumors, or harm someone’s reputation. I want technology to empower my generation, not mislead us. As a future computer science engineer, I feel responsible for working on solutions that use AI for good and help people trust the digital world again.
