UnWire : Untangling cities, one pole at a time

The Problem

Indian cities are tangled in unsafe, unorganised electric and communication wires. These messy clusters cause frequent service disruptions, electrocution hazards, fire risks, harm to wildlife, and make cities look unplanned and chaotic.

Causes:
  • Multiple providers using the same poles without coordination
  • Failure to remove old and unused wires
  • Weak enforcement of safety and municipal regulations
  • Low-hanging wires that endanger people, workers, and animals

Why It Matters to Me

A few years ago, I was walking down a busy street when I saw something I'll never forget. A bird, tangled in a mess of wires, was struggling to free itself. Then, in a flash, it was gone, its life lost in a tragic, preventable accident.
That incident made me realise that unorganised wiring isn't just an eyesore; it's a profound risk to lives, safety, and the environment. Since then, I've wanted to build a systematic and sustainable solution.

Our Startup

UnWire works with municipalities, ISPs, telecom providers, and electricity boards to deliver end-to-end solutions — from safe installation to smart monitoring and recycling. By combining technology with sustainability, we create a cleaner, safer, and more accountable urban future.

Our Solutions

                     1. Modular Cable Management Systems

    • We use industry-standard cable trays, conduits, and labelled bundling systems to securely elevate, separate, and organise wires for every utility.
    • Colour coding and owner-specific tags are applied to each wire, enabling faster identification and reducing mistakes during maintenance or upgrades.

      2. Active Monitoring and Accountability
    • IoT-enabled monitoring devices detect loose, damaged, or redundant wires.
    • Regular audits in partnership with municipal bodies to ensure old and unauthorised connections are systematically removed.

      3. Wire Recovery and Recycling Program
  • Structured processes to collect and recycle unused or illegal wires, reducing clutter while contributing to a circular economy.

  • Your biggest challenge, which you rightly address, will be navigating the partnerships with multiple service providers and municipalities. Your success will hinge on becoming the trusted, neutral party that can get everyone to cooperate
  • You perfectly capture the chaos of urban wiring in India. The causes you list are accurate and show you've done your homework. This isn't an abstract problem; it's a daily reality for millions.
  • The accountability created by tagging and monitoring will be a game-changer for utility providers. Systematically identifying and removing unauthorized connections will directly combat power theft and illegal cable hookups, plugging a massive source of revenue leakage.
  • First impressions matter so much. For tourists and visitors, the 'wire-spaghetti' is often a jarring sight. By decluttering our cityscapes, UnWire could significantly boost our city's image and appeal, which is a subtle but powerful boost for tourism and investment.
  • This project directly addresses the reliability of our digital infrastructure. Stable internet and power are no longer luxuries. UnWire's solution for organized cabling could help bridge the digital divide by providing a more stable and dependable network for everyone.
  • The focus on colour-coding and owner-specific tags is a simple but brilliant detail that will save countless hours of maintenance work and prevent accidental service cuts. It’s this attention to practical, on-the-ground challenges that makes the proposal so convincing.
  • This is more than just an aesthetic upgrade; it's an economic one. Organized infrastructure can significantly increase property values and make neighbourhoods more attractive for businesses. UnWire is building the foundation for more prosperous urban communities.
  • The active monitoring component is genius. The data collected from IoT sensors could be invaluable for predictive maintenance, allowing utilities to fix potential issues before they cause a blackout or internet outage. This is a truly proactive approach.
  • What I appreciate most is the long-term vision. This isn't a temporary fix; the combination of modular systems, active monitoring, and a recycling program creates a sustainable, self-regulating system for the future. It’s about building cities that are manageable for generations to come.
  • The collaborative model with municipalities, ISPs, and electricity boards is the key to making this work. It fosters shared responsibility and ensures all stakeholders are invested. This kind of Public-Private Partnership is exactly what's needed for sustainable urban development.
