The Problem :

Everyone misplaces things from time to time—keys, wallets, ID cards, bottles, or even bags. It’s a small problem, but when it happens, it causes stress and wastes time. Current solutions don’t fully solve this issue. Devices like AirTags or Tile trackers are expensive and work best only within their ecosystems. On the other hand, QR code stickers are cheaper, but they only work if someone notices and scans them. Neither option feels complete or accessible for everyday people.

 The Solution: TraceIt

TraceIt is a lost-and-found system that combines Bluetooth tracking with QR fallback. Each item has a small, affordable sticker that works with the TraceIt app. If you lose something nearby, the app guides you using “hot-cold” style directions. If the item is farther away, TraceIt uses other users’ phones to anonymously update the location. And if someone who doesn’t have the app finds your item, they can still scan the QR code to contact you securely.

 Who Benefits :

This approach makes TraceIt useful for almost everyone. Students can keep track of their ID cards and bottles, parents can stop worrying about kids’ things, professionals can safeguard their laptops, and travelers can protect luggage and passports. The more people use it, the stronger the community becomes, since everyone’s phone helps build the network.

 Why It Matters :

I think this problem matters because it’s something we all face. Losing things is a universal frustration, and the current solutions are either too costly or not reliable enough. With TraceIt, the focus is on being simple, affordable, and privacy-friendly. It can save people time, reduce replacement costs, and even help cut down on waste from lost items.

  • TraceIt is a smart, hybrid lost-and-found solution combining Bluetooth tracking with QR code fallback. It's affordable, privacy-conscious, and accessible—ideal for students, professionals, and travelers seeking reliable item recovery.
  • TraceIt smartly combines Bluetooth and QR tracking to offer an affordable, accessible, and privacy-conscious solution for everyday lost items. Its community-driven fallback system adds robustness beyond personal tracking. Success will depend on widespread adoption to ensure the network is effective and reliable.
  • Great idea! Highlighting how users phones help each other creates a sense of shared benefit and creates a strong community, which is helpful for everyone using this service.
  • Great idea! How do you plan to ensure user privacy when other phones help track lost items?
  • I like how this is affordable unlike the airtags or tile trackers. But it would be great if there was a solution that’ll work even when people are offline.
  • I love this idea! It’s really useful and relates to everyone. Maybe you could also add a feature that notifies users if they’re about to leave an item behind (like keys or ID) — that way TraceIt doesn’t just help after you lose something, but also prevents it from happening in the first place.
  • I really like the hot-cold navigation and community updates. I am interested to learn more about how data privacy and security are maintained throughout the recovery process. Excellent idea of combining Bluetooth and QRs for recovery!
  • I really like this concept because it solves a very real, everyday problem. The blend of Bluetooth and QR makes it both reliable and accessible. It’s simple, affordable, and feels like something anyone—students, parents, or travellers—could benefit from.
  • You could expand on the sustainability angle — fewer lost items means less production waste and shipping impact, the idea by itself very innovative tough.
  • I think it's a brilliant idea. Not only would it save the hassle of having to contact people who found your lost item it would also make it time-efficient to use the hot-cold system. Would the QR Code have a chip in order to help GPS location tracking? I suggest that they are one-time use stickers to keep them cost effective and affordable.
