SkidSafe – A Smart Skid Detection and Safe Halt System for Two-Wheelers

 

Introduction

Two-wheelers are the backbone of daily transport for millions of people, especially in developing countries. From students and delivery drivers to office workers, bikes are affordable, fast, and convenient. However, they also come with a serious safety risk: skidding.

Every year, countless accidents happen because bikes lose traction on wet roads, gravel, or sudden braking. Even minor skids can cause severe injuries, property damage, or even fatalities. While advanced safety systems like ABS exist, they are expensive and often limited to high-end bikes.

My idea: SkidSafe, an affordable skid detection and safe-halt mechanism that prevents falls by detecting skids early and automatically controlling the brakes for a stable stop.

 

The Problem

  • Skidding Accidents: Common on wet or slippery roads, especially at sudden stops.

  • Limited Safety Features: Low-cost bikes and scooters often lack ABS or advanced braking systems.

  • High Fatalities: Two-wheeler accidents make up a huge share of road deaths worldwide.

  • Cost Barriers: Existing technologies are expensive and not retrofit-friendly.

 

The Solution: SkidSafe

  • Sensors: Wheel-speed detectors + accelerometers + gyroscopes detect loss of traction.

  • Control System: Identifies when wheels are slipping and predicts an imminent skid.

  • Automatic Intervention: Smart brake modulation prevents lock-up and brings the bike to a safe halt.

  • Fail-Safe Design: Riders can override or manually control brakes anytime.

  • Retrofit Option: Designed as a low-cost add-on kit for scooters and motorcycles.
