In my college, engineering students like me often have to buy sensors, lab kits, multimeters, Arduino boards, and other small tools for just one project or one semester. After the work is done, these things are left unused or thrown away. It is a waste of money and also adds to electronic waste. At the moment there is no proper way to avoid this. The campus shop only sells new items, WhatsApp resale groups are confusing, and outside rental services are expensive or don’t deliver to students. Because of this, I see a clear need for a simple, low-cost sharing system run by students.
My idea is to start PeerGear, a campus-wide platform where students can share and rent lab kits and tools. PeerGear will be a simple website or mobile app where students can book the parts and tools they need for a day, a week, or a semester. We will keep an on-campus collection of popular items such as breadboards, soldering irons, power supplies, and sensors. Seniors can donate or lend their old equipment and earn credits whenever their items are borrowed. Students who rent will pay a small fee and a refundable deposit. QR codes or simple tags can track who borrowed what. I can build the first version using free tools like Firebase, Replit, and a basic UPI payment setup.
Who Will Benefit
- Students: They will save money and get the parts they need quickly.
- Departments and Campus: Less electronic waste and a stronger culture of sharing.
- Myself: I can earn from small rental fees, late return charges, or extra services like priority booking or hostel delivery. Most of the stock can come from donations, so my start-up cost will stay low.
How I Benefit
Through PeerGear, I will make side income with very little investment. I will also learn useful skills in web development, payments, marketing, and managing a small business—skills that will help in jobs or higher studies. I will meet more students and teachers, build a network, and gain a good name on campus. If it works well, I can expand PeerGear to other colleges or even create a ready-made software package to sell.
- This idea matters to me because I have bought costly components for one-time use while friends were still searching for the same items. PeerGear will keep resources moving, save money for everyone, cut waste, and give me real business experience along with steady pocket money.
