Problem:
public washrooms are an unavoidable part of daily life, especially in schools , hostels, colleges , workplaces , etc. Nevertheless, hygiene is one of the largest issues. Most toilets are either not cleaned regularly or lack transparency about the level of cleanliness. In females, especially, this issue is critical, whereby the lack of hygienic toilets may cause infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs). On my part, there have been instances of fatigue and stress when I do not want to use a restroom during traveling or in hostels due to poor maintenance. This renders the issue to be not only a matter of comfort but also of a public health.

Solution:
My solution is HygiScan which is a smart hygiene monitoring device in the public restrooms. The device uses sensors to track :
  • odor levels (ammonia-gas levels/methane-gas levels) to detect foul smell,
  • Humidity sensors to check wet floors or dirty (uncleaned)  floors,
  • usage count sensors to monitor the number of times washroom is used and give out alerts when used heavily.

This information would be calculated and presented as Cleanliness Score on a display touchscreen outside the restroom

  • green = clean,
  • yellow = moderate,
  • red = needs cleaning)

At the same time, cleaning staff would receive real-time alerts on an app, enabling them to clean when needed rather than adhering to a strict timetable.

Impact & Benefits:
  • To the users: Guarantees of hygiene, less risk of infection, increased trust in using the common facilities
  • In women and children : protection againts UTI and other health complications.
  • To cleaning staff and authorities: Time saving, cost savings and better accountability.
  • To the society: improved public health and higher hygiene standards.

Why it matters to me:
Being a girl, it is incredibly hard to manage in case of unhygienic toilets in the public. The fear of infections and the discomfort of withholding is exhausting. A system like HygiScan would simplify the day-to-day life and make it healthier, safer, and less stressful.

  • The HygiScan concept seems like a very thoughtful and practical solution to a common public health problem. It directly addresses the issue of unsanitary public washrooms by promoting real-time accountability and proactive cleaning. The use of a simple, color-coded scoring system makes the information easily accessible to the public, while the alerts to staff streamline the cleaning process. This type of innovation could significantly improve public hygiene and user trust in shared facilities. However, as some commenters on the original blog post noted, successful implementation would depend on practical factors like preventing vandalism and ensuring a timely response from cleaning staff.
  • This is a highly thoughtful and well-organized concept — it clearly identifies key pain points across the rare-earth recycling chain and proposes a practical, tech-enabled solution. Strengthening it with some quantifiable impact estimates or early partnership pathways would make it even more compelling and actionable.
  • HygiScan is an excellent and much-needed innovation that addresses a real public health concern with smart technology. The idea of using sensors to monitor cleanliness and display real-time hygiene scores is both practical and impactful. It not only ensures safer and cleaner facilities but also promotes accountability and comfort, especially for women. A thoughtful and socially valuable solution!
  • This is insane in the best way! Imagine every public restroom being this cleanThe focus on users’ health (especially women and children) is powerful — this is the kind of innovation that brings dignity and safety. This is an excellent and socially impactful idea. HygiScan addresses a real and often overlooked public health concern with a smart, data-driven approach.
  • HygiScan is a really smart, practical idea! Making restroom hygiene measurable and transparent with sensors + real-time alerts could transform how public washrooms are maintained and trusted. The focus on users’ health (especially women and children) is powerful — this is the kind of innovation that brings dignity and safety.
  • This is a thoughtful and innovative solution to a widespread hygiene problem. Highlighting how HygiScan could be implemented cost-effectively or scaled across different types of public facilities would make the idea even more practical and compelling.
  • This is insane in the best way! Imagine every public restroom being this clean and monitored. But what about power and internet reliability?
  • This is an excellent and socially impactful idea. HygiScan addresses a real and often overlooked public health concern with a smart, data-driven approach. By using sensors to track odor, humidity, and usage, your system ensures transparency in restroom hygiene and allows for on-demand cleaning instead of inefficient scheduled maintenance. The Cleanliness Score display adds both accountability and user confidence, while real-time alerts empower cleaning staff to act promptly. Your personal motivation gives the project authenticity and empathy—showing a deep understanding of how hygiene, dignity, and health are connected. A truly innovative step toward smarter, safer, and more hygienic public spaces.
  • Bhavana, I’m genuinely amazed! Low-cost, tamper-proof sensors that track restroom hygiene? This is futuristic. How do you prevent vandalism?
  • Bhavana, this could be a game-changer for how we think about hygiene in shared spaces. One question though , how do you make sure cleaning staff actually respond to the alerts? Sometimes the issue is not detection, but action.
