Solving a Real-World Problem
A collector spends 5 mins per house during waste collection but they spend 10 mins segregating the waste they collected. When we collect over 100 households, this means an additional 300-500 minutes (5–8 hours) of manual segregation work compared to collecting segregated waste and many places often ignore waste segregation and dump them in the open which proves waste disposal is a pervasive problem worldwide, leading to environmental pollution, health hazards, and resource wastage. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of awareness and clarity on how to correctly segregate and dispose of different types of waste. Contaminated recyclables, mixed garbage, and hazardous waste often end up in landfills or incinerators, causing damage to ecosystems and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. This app directly addresses this problem by empowering individuals with easy-to-understand, location-specific guidance on how to dispose of their waste properly, thereby reducing contamination and improving recycling rates.

Highlighting Gaps in Current Solutions/Market

There already exist few garbage management apps but most suffer from the following limitations:

• Lack of localized, detailed disposal instructions for diverse product types.
• Minimal integration with local municipal schedules and recycling centers.
• Poor user engagement is a major problem and the lack of awareness leads to low adoption rate and impact.
• Limited tools for real-time issue reporting. Lack of interaction with the community and users.

Our app fills these gaps by combining AI-powered product identification, customized local information, and interactive educational content. It not only guides users but also motivates and involves communities to actively participate in sustainable waste management.

Why This Problem Matters to Me
Garbage management is one of the most critical sustainability challenges of our time, yet many people remain unaware of how their individual actions can make a difference. I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of simple, accessible guidance leads to avoidable environmental damage and community health issues around me. This app is my way of contributing to a cleaner planet by empowering people with the knowledge and tools they need to make responsible choices every day.

Optional Technical Details
The app uses a barcode scanner to categorize the waste .If a bar code isn’t present for an item it uses AI image recognition for quick item identification, combined with GPS-based localization to provide tailored recycling center data and pickup schedules. It supports push notifications for reminders and educational tips and features a community forum for user engagement. Future versions will explore partnerships with local authorities for real-time updates.
