AiR - Automating Air Traffic Using AI

Problem statement

Recently there have been close calls in the avation sector, mainly with airplanes; a primary example would be that an Air India flight is taking off from the run way, and an Indigo flight is trying to land on the same run way at the same time, both these planes were very close to each other, and would have collided if not for a 2-3 second difference. This was just one example, there have been multiple incidents like these in relation to flight safety mainly due to errors caused by the Air Traffic controllers. The air traffic controllers have very irregular timings, and just imagine the reduction in the efficiency of those ATC who are working during the night hours (night shifts).

Gaps

The air traffic is mainly managed by humans, and we can't take a chance with peoples lives. And there has not been any AI/ or an AI agent for an air traffic controller.

Solution

We can have an AI agent, which is able to detect the incoming flights on the radar, the agent is automatically able to assign which flight will come for landing on which runway and at which time, based on an ML algorithm. We are able to maintain a significant distance between both planes ie greater than 5 miles, which is crutial for flight safety. The goal is to reduce the hassle and the stress the air traffic controllers take. The algorithm will have many parameters such as the fuel remaining, time remaining for landing, presence of a mayday call, presence of a pan call, number of souls on board, weight of the aircraft, presence of an emergency, physical and mental condition of the pilots, total time flown so far and many more critical factors.

So the AI considers all these parameters, where each parameter will have its own priority, for example a Mayday call will have the highest priority. And the flight having the highest priority will be allowed to land first....

Benefits

Using AI to make the take off and landing clearance calls to prevent such massive disasters, will evade a ton of stress among the ATC because one air traffic controller is responsible for 15-20 flights. We are also saving a lot of time, becasue the AI is able to give multiple calls to various pilots at the same time. It may not saves lives directly, but it does indirectly. If there is a crash due to the ATC being fatigued, this will cost lives, using an AI agent we could have prevented such a painful accident.

Why it matters to me

Life is the most important thing on this planet, We must forget all the money and status, the most amazing thing in the world is simply being alive. Life is the one gift that makes everything else real it’s the beautiful, messy chance we have to genuinely love and care for one another.

  • Great idea Ved. This is truly something I've never seen suggested before and can be revolutionary in determining the future of air traffic. There have been too many errors that have lost lives in the recent past and this can improve those rates drastically if done properly.
  • Great job, looks innovative, and seems to be really impressive
  • crazy idea bro.....Thats really amazing, it will also be cool if interested passengers can listen to the conversations between take off and landings, but yeah it will also feel scary incase of an emergency.
    Fantastic !!
    • Thats seems fun and interesting, but the ML idea is the main plan, I just hope if I can try and bring this into real life.
  • This is a strong idea that uses AI to improve air traffic safety and reduce controller fatigue. Automating runway decisions could minimize human error, though explaining how it handles sudden emergencies would make it more complete. Like, for example, where an ATC accidentally routes on a runway where another AI routed a plan to land. There are many cases where ATC and AI can interfere.
    • Yes its true, in case of an emergency, all the controls will go the human atc, because humans have emotions and AI ATC unfortunately does not have them
  • A insightful idea that tackles real aviation safety issues. We've witnessed too many close calls and some disasters in managing air traffic recently and hopefully this will improve that rate. The only issue I see is that a human may be overloaded in managing the AI due to many improper calls.
  • Fantastic Idea Ved, communication in AiR by improving flight safety is essential, adding an another safety layer is very helpful and safer to all the passengers on board..
  • This is a fantastic proposal that addresses a critical need for safety in aviation. Focusing on human error and fatigue is smart, but your next step should be detailing the Human-AI collaboration model specifically, how human controllers will efficiently override or supervise the AI's critical real-time decisions.
    • Yes that is the main idea....
