AiR - Automating Air Traffic Using AI

Problem statement

Recently there have been close calls in the avation sector, mainly with airplanes; a primary example would be that an Air India flight is taking off from the run way, and an Indigo flight is trying to land on the same run way at the same time, both these planes were very close to each other, and would have collided if not for a 2-3 second difference. This was just one example, there have been multiple incidents like these in relation to flight safety mainly due to errors caused by the Air Traffic controllers. The air traffic controllers have very irregular timings, and just imagine the reduction in the efficiency of those ATC who are working during the night hours (night shifts).

Gaps

The air traffic is mainly managed by humans, and we can't take a chance with peoples lives. And there has not been any AI/ or an AI agent for an air traffic controller.

Solution

We can have an AI agent, which is able to detect the incoming flights on the radar, the agent is automatically able to assign which flight will come for landing on which runway and at which time, based on an ML algorithm. We are able to maintain a significant distance between both planes ie greater than 5 miles, which is crutial for flight safety. The goal is to reduce the hassle and the stress the air traffic controllers take. The algorithm will have many parameters such as the fuel remaining, time remaining for landing, presence of a mayday call, presence of a pan call, number of souls on board, weight of the aircraft, presence of an emergency, physical and mental condition of the pilots, total time flown so far and many more critical factors.

So the AI considers all these parameters, where each parameter will have its own priority, for example a Mayday call will have the highest priority. And the flight having the highest priority will be allowed to land first....

Benefits

Using AI to make the take off and landing clearance calls to prevent such massive disasters, will evade a ton of stress among the ATC because one air traffic controller is responsible for 15-20 flights. We are also saving a lot of time, becasue the AI is able to give multiple calls to various pilots at the same time. It may not saves lives directly, but it does indirectly. If there is a crash due to the ATC being fatigued, this will cost lives, using an AI agent we could have prevented such a painful accident.

Why it matters to me

Life is the most important thing on this planet, We must forget all the money and status, the most amazing thing in the world is simply being alive. Life is the one gift that makes everything else real it’s the beautiful, messy chance we have to genuinely love and care for one another.

  • This is a powerful idea — the way you highlight human fatigue in ATC work makes the case very real. Automating runway clearances with AI could save both lives and stress for controllers. One question: how will you ensure pilots and ATCs fully trust the AI’s decisions in high-pressure, life-or-death moments?
    • Yes, the agent will do most of the stuff, but it will be monitored carefully by human atc during the initial stages, not just that in case of any emergency the control for that plane will go to a human atc.
  • This is a much needed solution to existing problems. Human error will always exist and the only way to solve it is to use trustworthy agents. However, the AI agent will have a huge responsibility. You will have to do rigorous testing.
    • Thats really true, we will have to test it out a lot, AI agent can also make errors, but yeah will try my best to make it 100 percent accurate.....
  • This a great idea! Where ever humans are involved, there is always a chance for mistakes which could lead to dangerous situations. Your. idea completely removes this problem, AI can do many more tasks than a human quickly and efficiently. This not only improves efficiency but also indirectly saves lives.
  • Really creative idea. A specially trained LLM would be able to accurately complete this and save a lot of time and stress from an air traffic controller. This would also reduce errors made by ATCs making the flying experience much safer.
  • That’s a powerful perspective. Your idea shows how technology can serve humanity at its core—protecting lives and easing human stress. In the end, every innovation should center around valuing and preserving life above all else.
  • This is a really powerful and innovative idea—practical, human-centered, and impactful. It can truly make air travel safer.

Trust, I feel like would be a major issue. What do you think on how to overcome the challenge in getting ATCs to trust and adopt such a system?
    • You are right, trust would be a major issue, to address that I would approach small domestic airports like ones in Lakshadweep, smaller airports in the north east like Baljek Airport (Meghalaya)......I would start convincing the ATC in these small airports first. Once we try these AI agents in the presence of the current human ATC, we can have a formal proof of correctness, that this does truly work.... after which I would approach the small international airports like Shirdi (SAG), Begumpet(HYD).....and slowly we would get good constructive feedback, and then with more reports of approval I can hopefully get into RGIA(HYD), MAA(Chennai), DXB( Dubai), SIN(Singapore Changi) , DOH(Doha, Qatar), EWR(Newark, NJ) .....
